The shameful night changed nothing even after 5 years
Maa Mujhe Dar lagta hai bohat dar Lagta hai..
Suraj ki Roshani aag si lagti hai..
Paani ki boondien bhi tehzaab si lagti hai…
Maa hawa mein bhi zeher sa ghula lagta hai..
Maa mujhe chupa le bohat darr lagta hai..
Maa yaad hai woh kaanch ki gudiya jo bachpan mein tuti thi..
Maa kuch aise hi aaj mein tut gayi hu..
Maa tujhe yaad hai tere aangaan mein chidhiya si fudak rahi thi..
Thokar kha k main zameen par gir padi thi..
Maa tune toh mujhe phoolon ki tarahn paala tha…
Un darindo ka aakhir maine kya bigada tha..
Kyu woh mujhe iss tarah masal k chale gaye..
Bedard meri rooh ko kuchal k chale gaye..
Par maa tu toh kehti thi
apni gudiya ko dulhan banaungi…
Poem by a raped girl
We are still standing at the same point where we were 5 years ago. Nothing has changed, nothing has improved, women’s condition is still critical. The dreadful night of December 16, 2012, gave a serious gash to the country’s freedom.
A 23-year old girl ‘Jyoti Singh’ whom we gave a name ‘Nirbhaya’ in a tribute to her spirit when was gang raped with a sheer brutality. Her dignity, her life, her womanhood violated in the most unimaginable intimidating way possible by 6 cruel men including a juvenile. Nirbhaya was gang-raped in a moving bus and she with her friend was thrown out of the bus when their purpose was accomplished to sieve the brave girl. The pride of the country lost her life after battling with her injuries from inside out. But even when she was losing her life, she gave the country a courage to demand a justice on behalf of her.
The nation stood together for Nirbhaya. The Supreme Court of India called the case- ‘Rarest of the Rare’ and awarded death penalty to the accused except juvenile. Though, the juvenile has been freed now but what the men in the country have been taught?
Nirbhaya or Jyoti sacrificed her life that she never wanted to do, but her death shook up the collective conscience of the nation, which was so far in the state of hibernation.
But the question is – What has been changed so far? Is the condition of a woman in the country improved? Can women go out freely in the night or in the day as well? No. There has not been much change on the ground, and unfortunately, Jyoti was not the only Nirbhaya, the unwanted title has been provided to the women of the age of 80 to the girl of 8 years of age.
Unfortunately, we are still in hibernation. The crime rates against women in the country are so disheartening that break the spunk of every girl before stepping out in the society.
It’s been 5 years, 1828 days, 43872 hours since the dignity of Nirbhaya snatched brutally but the crime rates against women are seeing a new height every day and the statistics are its proof.
Let’s see the data of the National capital Delhi where Nirbhaya was gang raped. From the year 2013 to 2017, Delhi recorded 10,124 rape cases. NCRB declared Delhi, a no place for women after recording the highest number of crimes against women. The data includes 79 Gang rape cases, 1996 rape cases, 668 cases of stalking, 144 dowry death cases.
You will be shocked to know that over the past decade, 2.24 million crimes against women were recorded. In every hour, 26 crimes against women are reported.
These are the statistics but no data can show the grief of parents. Not only a girl raped but her family also. Jyoti’s father said: Na sooraj badla, Naa chand badla, Agar badla hai to bas waqt…
