Women! Do You Know These Laws Against Sexual Crimes?

We live in a democratic world where we are given equal rights irrespective of our gender! Am I saying right women? If we are given equal rights, equal freedom then why we are asked to live keeping in mind that we are women? Because we are prone to fall prey to sexual harassment in some or other way. No matter it is home, school, transport, college, workplace or other’s place, we are getting harassed everywhere. Those unwanted request for sexual favors, those unwanted physical touches, those molesting eyes, those unwelcomed sexual advances, those disgraceful offers hurt us to the inner core of our modesty. We do not deserve it, let us live freely, follow our dreams without any fear of YOU.

Sexual harassment at any place is a criminal offence and a woman has all the right to fight it with all her force and for the same, she must know the laws made for her and against the sexual crimes in India.

So, women, you should be well aware of these laws against sexual crimes:

1. First Information Report

A woman who faces sexual harassment is recommended to file an FIR in the nearest police station. The nearest police station is obliged to register your FIR and in a language that you understand. No policeman can deny registering your FIR.

2. Indian Penal Code section 294

via

IPC section 294 says, any man does any obscene act in any public place, or sings, recites or utters any obscene song, ballad or words, in or near any public place, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to three months, or with fine, or with both.

3. Indian Penal Code section 503

IPC section 503 says, if a person threatens any woman to harm her physically, her reputation or property for not doing which she is not legally bound to do, or to omit to do any act includes person’s sexual advances shall be punished with the imprisonment of 2 years.

4. Indian Penal Code section 354 (A)

IPC section 354 (A) says, a man committing any physical contact and advances involving unwelcome and explicit sexual overtures or a demand or request for sexual favors or showing pornography against the will of a woman shall be punished with rigorous imprisonment one-three years, or with fine, or with both.

5. Indian Penal Code section 354(c)

The IPC section 354 (c) says, any man who watches, or captures the image of a woman engaging in a private act where she would usually have the expectation of not being observed by any other person at shall be punished on first conviction with imprisonment of either description for a term which shall not be less than one year, but which may extend to three years, and shall also be liable to fine, and be punished on a second or subsequent conviction, with imprisonment of either description for a term which shall not be less than three years, but which may extend to seven years, and shall also be liable to fine.

 

6. Indian Penal Code section 354 (D)

IPC section 354(D) says, Any man follows a woman and contacts, or attempts to contact such woman to foster personal interaction repeatedly despite a clear indication of disinterest by such woman or commits the offence of stalking shall be punished with imprisonment for three-five years.

7. Indian Penal Code section 509

IPC section 509 says, any man intending to insult the modesty of any woman, utters any word, makes any sound or gesture, or exhibits any object, intending that such word or sound shall be heard intrudes upon the privacy of such woman, shall be punished with imprisonment for one year may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both.

8. IT act 2000, section 67

The section 67 of IT act says, whoever publishes or transmits in the electronic form any material which contains sexually explicit act or conduct shall be punished on first conviction with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to five years and with fine which may extend to ten lakh.

9. Indian Penal Code section 499

IPC section 499 says, modifying and altering pictures of any woman for posting the pictures online on a social network with a purpose of harassing and insulting her is a criminal offence and whoever does so shall be punished with imprisonment of 2 years of jail or a fine or with both.

10. Sexual harassment of women at workplace Act, 2013

The act says if any senior colleague or boss asks any sexual favors in exchange for work benefits is an act of sexual harassment at workplace. The act that seeks to protect women from sexual harassment at their place of work.

Every Indian woman must know these laws of India to protect herself from sexual harassment and ask for justice.
