India indeed a land of vast diversity but over the years Indian government is banning things in the country. From homosexuality to advertising alcohol, from mannequins displaying lingerie to beef, we have heard an increasing number of bans.
In another surprising move, the BJP-led South Delhi Municipal Corporation has announced not to display non-veg food items on display. They said that it would be done for ‘hygiene’ and ‘sentimental’ reasons.
According to the report, “the BJP ruled SDMC saw the proposal being brought up by a councilor from Najafgarh’s Kakrola village and was approved. The Leader of the House, Shikha Rai justified the decision saying that the sentiments of the people were hurt by the sight of meat.”
“It was a private member resolution originally moved by a councilor from Kakrola village in Najafgarh Zone in the Health Committee meeting. The committee then moved it to the SDMC House, which then approved it,” a spokesperson of the SDMC said.
“Since it was a private member resolution, the proposal would now be sent to the Commissioner to be examined, if it is in accordance with the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act,” reported in NDTV.
What will happen if someone will not follow the order?
“IF RESTAURANT OWNERS ARE FOUND DISPLAYING NON-VEGETARIAN ITEMS IN PUBLIC, ACTION AGAINST THEM SHOULD BE TAKEN AS PER THE MUNICIPAL LAW.”
Twitter has obviously a lot to say about this banning government and “fundamentalism”:
#Where are we heading?
Why ban only the display. Why not ban the food altogether.

Shikha Rai also added, “It has been observed that shops displaying non-veg outside their premises attracts dogs and raise hygiene issue. Besides, it is also about hurting the sentiments of people who are vegetarian.”
